On Mother’s Day my grandson Aiden called me.
Aiden is six years old.
We have been planning his visit with his parents to Portland all spring.
He was excited to tell me about what he had learned from a book about Portland that I recently sent him.
It will be the first time that Aiden, who lives in Denver, will see the Pacific Ocean or bridges over the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.
In the midst of dealing with the crisis with my other son, it would be easy to postpone this trip. Sad, Scary News
My Sweet Grandson
Somehow, I have to be back in Portland in time to make his dream come true.
He is so excited to visit me.
Oma, Do you know many bridges are in Portland?
How many Aiden?
Seven! Maybe more!
Oma, can we ride the train?
Oma, can we go to the beach?
My sweet grandson.
What a big boy you are now.
What a treat to hear your voice.
Oma, do you know what is missing from the book you sent me?
No, what?
There is not a page about Oma!
Oh, I guess we will have to add one, won’t we?

It will be a wonderful distraction if only for a visit and help you recharge your batteries!! I had my 6 year old (turning 6 this week) great nephew overnight Saturday and even though my children are still young (15&12), the wonder of the world a 6 year old brings is so refreshing!

Time spent with grandchildren is too precious and limited to give up. I am glad you are going to make the time in spite of your other child’s very real needs.

Thank you Bernadette. I thought about postponing the trip until next summer. Aiden would be so disappointed and, quite frankly, who knows what the next year will bring. So, I am grabbing some joy with Aiden while we can. Thank you for your insightful response.

Thanks, Lori. The title! Oh groan. That is always the hardest part for me (and for many authors). I usually give it a working title and then try to think of something much better before it’s time to get a cover made up.

Oh the joy of a phone call if distance separates. Time spent with each grandchild even if by letter, card, phone, etc in spite of real needs with one family, cements and unites everyone.
