Kindness 101

I saw this sign when I visited the hospital yesterday.

I loved the sentiment.  So, I took a picture.

I resolved to be mindful and try to “walk in another’s shoes”.

On Second Thought

As I thought about it during the day, I determined that I should be kind even if someone is not fighting a hard a battle.

I should be kind because everyone deserves to be treated well.

I should be kind because kindness (respect, civility) is a virtue that I value.

If I have an unpleasant encounter, I still need to be kind.

In a perfect world, I can discuss the situation calmly with the other person.

We would both feel better even if we agreed to disagree.

Even Still

Life is not perfect.

Sometimes it is better to react kindly and then walk away.

Often, I can not influence another person’s behavior.

Always, I can influence mine.

I want to be a kind person.  That is one of my values.

Sometimes that is tested.

Sometimes my behavior tests others!

  1. On my date pad this morning. This is the quote …..As God’s people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves always with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Forgive as you yourself have been forgiven. Col. 3:12-13 I do not know where others have anchored their lives but I know WHO I follow and although in this dysfunctional world not all want to acknowledge their allegiance but Lori your blog continues to inspire in what to me is Holy Truth. Thank you. Oh yes the burdens and the struggles are REAL.

  3. Reblogged this on Lovewillbringustogether’s Weblog and commented:
A fellow blogger who is fighting one heck of a battle herself posted these thoughts. They bear repeating… as often and as widely as possible in my opinion.

  4. If i had just one wish that could be granted it would be that every single person on this earth followed and practiced what you wrote here, Lori! There is great wisdom in your thoughts.

It saddens me somewhat that there does not seem to be much mention or discussion of Human Virtues in today’s world or on-line – maybe i’m just not looking in the right places all that often?

Besides Kindness those virtues include Generosity (of spirit as well as material things), Humility, Integrity and being Faithful to what is true. I’m sure you and your readers can add others and hopefully we can spread awareness and practice of them all.

If i could have two wishes the second one would be for a complete recovery for Mabel’s Mum.

  5. Very nicely said. Unfortunately it is not a perfect world and sometimes people mistake kindness for weakness and take advantage. But if you can experience this and rise above, not letting it diminish your heart, continuing to spread kindness… That is an amazing thing and role models for others to follow. What a world it could be!
