It’s our turn

 It’s our turn.

A heat wave has settled over the Portland area.

Gone are our coolish days and nights.

Until yesterday, the weather has been so pleasant that I have not needed my central air conditioning system.  For a home built in 2010, my system, while better than nothing, is inadequate. I considered a mini split system but was discouraged by the $7000 cost.

In the meantime, I have cellular shades, shutters, awnings, darkening shades and fans to keep me and the house as cool as possible.

Rather than fret, I am changing my behavior.

  • Up early to shop, walk the dog and water my plants.
  • Never using my oven.
  • Air drying my clothes.
  • Eating salads, fresh fruit and gallons of gazpacho.
  • Drinking lots of water.

Still, I am plagued by an uneasy feeling, anxiety really, as I contemplate the changing weather patterns and especially the plight of the poor all over the world who have fewer choices.

  1. After your journey kind lady, it is just that you have much more empathy, compassion and love to give. Your heart cares so much more, and feels where before the shields were up. Yes, some days you want those shields back, but soon you will see that an open heart is in fact so much more powerful. Big hugs kind lady, you have already stepped into that acceptance of your heart and a much cooler path 😀❤️🙏

  2. My AC has actually been out most of the summer, so I’ve adopted similar tricks to beat the heat. I’ve really enjoyed having the windows and balcony doors open at night to cool the place down. Yesterday and last night there was pretty much no escape, though. Looking forward to a return to cooler weather this weekend. 🥵

  3. I remember the hot days before we got A/C. I used a fan a lot, and learned to block out the sun on the windows depending on which side was exposed at different times of the day. I must say though, having the A/C is much nicer though.

  4. Good for you. Much as I hate it, in summer I wake with the light and do my watering while the air is still cool. After that it’s batten down the hatches, so to speak, and do less physical things. I admit I do turn on the split system aircon by late afternoon, but it does get pretty hot here.
Hope things start cooling down for you soon. 🙂
